DPS says woman in lobbyist drugging allegation 'deceitful' and found no evidence of claim

A Texas Department of Public Safety investigation into the April allegation that a lobbyist drugged two female Capitol staffers concluded that no evidence supported the claim and that one of the women concocted the story to cover up an infidelity.

The 62-page report said one of the women "deceived" and "manipulated" the other into making a report to police that she knew was a lie and convinced her that she might have also been the victim of a date rape drug, even though she had not.

The outcry triggered an investigation that prompted the DPS to notify top state elected leaders last month and renewed concerns about whether the culture at the state Capitol fostered the mistreatment of women. It also prompted still pending legislation that lobbyists must undergo sexual harassment training.

As part of her report to the DPS, the second woman identified the lobbyist that they suspected of the drugging incident, and his name circulated throughout the Capitol as the alleged suspect.
