Texas voter suppression bill has been released

Here is a link to a site where you can download the bill

Michael Li is a former Baker Botts patent attorney who had the best webpage for Texas voting issues before he joined the Brennan Center.

The ACLU has their analysis out.

This new procedure for contesting elections means that there will be election contests after each close election. The procedures for these contests appear to be slanted towards overturning elections.

Historically, the Texas GOP has relied on vote by mail. The GOP exempted vote by mail from voter id rules because so many older GOP voters used this system and many of these voters no longer drive or have valid ids. After the 2010 elections, the Texas Democratic Party started focusing on voter by mail and for example, there 10 times the number of GOP straight ticket vote by mail compared to straight ticket Democratic vote by mail. Now, all voter by mail applications will have to have either social security number, or a certification that they do not have such a number

We will be busy educating voters and I am hopeful that these restrictions will hit the GOP harder than these restrictions will hit Democrats.

Every damn year is more despicable than the last. Talk about a race to the bottom. Fuck it—-we’re there... but I’m sure the bottom has a deep basement for these cretins to excavate!

The Texas House and Senate came up with a new voter suppression bill. Normally when you reconcile a bill in committee, you either accept or delete provisions in either bill. Here the GOP came up with a brand new bill that has a number of new provisions that were not in either of the prior Senate or House bill. The Texas Democrats have been using points of order to kill some nasty GOP bills. For example this young man has been very effective in using points of order

Tomorrow the House Democrats have identified a good number of inappropriate provisions and will be raising a ton of points of order

This will be fun to watch
