Former Midland councilman announces U.S. Senate run in 2024

During an event Thursday evening held by former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke, former Midland City Councilman John Love III announced he will follow in O’Rourke’s footsteps by challenging U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz in 2024.

“With what’s already happened this past year, we can’t afford to wait to start building the campaign needed to defeat Ted Cruz in 2024,” Love states on his campaign website.

Love, a Democrat, served three terms as councilman of District 2 before he resigned in 2019 to challenge Sen. John Cornyn. He then ended that Senate bid three months after he announced his campaign, telling the Reporter-Telegram he lacked the time and financial resources to compete for the Democratic Party nomination. Cornyn went on to defeat Democratic nominee MJ Hegar by almost 10 percentage points.

Love is currently a financial consultant. He previously served as mayor pro tem for the Midland City Council in 2014 and 2019. He is also the past president of the Texas Municipal League and former chairman of the Permian Basin Metropolitan Planning Organization.
