Webb Co. denies restraining order filed by family of United ISD students refusing face masks
LAREDO -- On Wednesday, 341st Webb County District Court Judge Beckie Palomo denied a temporary restraining order filed by a family after their United ISD students refused to wear a mask on the first day of school despite the districts required mask mandate issued last week.
Pedro Lopez filed the original complaint on Tuesday stating that the UISD school district has violated Governor Gregg Abbotts Executive Order GA-38 and that the children represented were illegally expelled from school.
The governors order states that no government entity, including a county, city, school district and public health authority can require any person to wear a face covering.
However, last Thursday, UISD enacted a mask mandate for the first 30 days of the school year. Students and employees will have to always wear a mask at district facilities. The City of Laredo told LMT Friday that a temporary restraining order was filed by the city against the state of Texas and Abbotts executive order.
