Polls open today in election to choose Gallegos successor

Voters head to the polls Saturday in the race for state Senate District 6, to replace the late Mario Gallegos, who died last October and was posthumously elected a month later.

<<<snip>>>

Voters are required to cast a ballot at the polling place in their precinct. Information about where to vote can be found at www.harrisvotes.org.

Voters will need a voter registration card or a driver's license, passport or other document that verifies the person's identity.

The eight candidates in the race include five Democrats, state Rep. Carol Alvarado, former Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia, neighborhood activist Joaquin Martinez, former League City Councilman Rufolfo "Rudy" Reyes and real estate agent Susan Delgado; two Republicans, R.W. Bray, who lost to Gallegos last fall, and Dorothy Olmos, a former teacher; and a Green Party candidate, Maria Selva.

If you live in Houston's East End, Galena Park, Pasadena or Baytown, it's time to GOTV! We don't need another crappy Repuke legislator in Austin. The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and you will need to bring either your voter registration card or some other form of identification (see link).

Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia and State Rep. Carol Alvarado will meet in a runoff for the Senate District 6 seat.

Garcia received about 45.4 percent of votes and Alvarado received 41.7 percent in Saturday's election to fill the seat of the late state Sen. Mario Gallegos, according to preliminary results from the Harris County Clerk's office.

The date of the run-off election between the two Democrats will be announced by Gov. Rick Perry once an official count is complete, officials with the Secretary of State's Office said.

Predominantly Hispanic, state Senate District 6 includes Houston's East End, as well as parts of Pasadena, Galena Park and Baytown. Gallegos represented the district from 1994 until he died last October from complications related to a liver transplant.
