Teen who ran over 6 cyclists outside Houston walks free
Authorities are tight-lipped about whether or not the teenager would face any charges after the fact.

The force of the impact damaged the front end of the teenager's truck.

Immediately after harassing and running over six cyclists near Houston this past weekend, the teenager behind the wheel of the black truck had one thing on his mind, according to a witness: "Do you think I'm going to jail?"
The answer, as it turned out, was no.
The 16-year-old driver appeared to have been trying to "roll coal" on a group of eight cyclists training for the Ironman Triathlon, according to fellow cyclist Chase Ferrell. Ferrell was a few paces behind the group when the driver blew thick, black smoke on him as he pedaled along Old Highway 290 on Saturday morning. Moments later, the driver caught up to the larger group up ahead and tried doing the same thing.
The group of cyclists were enjoying a bright, sunny day before the collision.

Only, the second time was different. The driver, instead of blowing smoke on the group, accelerated and slammed into six of the eight cyclists, Ferrell and police say. He stopped, got out and surveyed the wreckage before Ferrell caught up to the scene.
"Yeah, you did something really freaking stupid," Ferrell recalled telling the teen. "You should go to jail."
It is not clear why the teenager was not immediately arrested. Representatives at the Waller County District Attorney's Office did not answer questions about the case but instead referred to a Facebook post saying it is still under investigation by police.
All that remained after the wreck were mangled bicycles.

(15,705 posts)We need separate bike lane preferably after the sidewalks. Its dangerous driving with bikes especially in groups. This teen obviously did this on purpose but many hit bikers accidentally everyday. A change is needed.

(111,981 posts)I went to a bike shop about 10-15 miles away from where the incident occurred. Most of the bikes that would be used in an Iron-Man type of competition were selling at about $2,000. The most expensive bike had a price tag of $6,000.
I suspect that the driver of the truck will see some time in jail for his foolishness. I also think that with so many injuries that it will probably exhaust the policy limits for the insured. That means that the parents could be held liable and have to contribute to the settlement of claims.

The driver is considered a minor in Texas, so the legal consequences are unclear for now.

A 16-year-old pickup driver hit multiple cyclists on Saturday morning near Waller, Texas, a city just west of Houston. The teenager struck six cyclists in all, and two of them were airlifted to local hospitals to treat shoulder, neck and back injuries; one cyclist suffered head trauma, according to KTRK. Police questioned the teenager afterwards, but didnt arrest or otherwise detain him.
The teenager was driving a Ford F-Series Super Duty pickup, and had been harassing the cyclists earlier by rolling coal,or blowing a noxious cloud of black exhaust from your truck tailpipe.
Cyclists have been the target of coal-rollers, as KPRC reports, and this incident is exactly what can happen in the aftermath of these stunts.

Battery because of lung damage and perhaps accidents.
And then this shit added battery with grievous harm (I think even Texass has added penalties for exacerbating circumstances).

He told me his lungs hurt after breathing the diesel exhaust fumes. I told him, "that would be the sulfur. It turns into sulfuric acid in the lungs!"

(22,665 posts)TFG and his clan have already shown that laws don't matter, not even for openly and disturbingly sick twisted individuals. The law can be wielded so that even after conviction and jailing, right-wing criminals have a get-out-of-jail free card.
And that's today's Karl Rove legal system for you.

(736 posts)The only time I've ever been bothered while riding was on a long ride outside of Fort Worth way back in the 80s. A pickup truck pulled up right next to me and the passenger tried to grab my leg. Luckily they kept on driving and left me alone.
I don't know how progressives can live in that state. It's just awful and always has been.
