Teen confronts man holding 8 hostage in store and dies in shootout, Texas police say

A teen was killed in a shootout with a man accused of holding a group hostage inside a Texas store, police said.

The man was armed with two guns Monday night when he jumped on the counter of a Houston convenience store and demanded everyone stop moving, KPRC reported. The store had five customers and three employees inside, the news outlet reported.

The man told them to lock the doors and get on the floor, KTRK reported.

Then a 17-year-old armed with a gun entered the store, according to the news outlet, and demanded the hostages be released.

“It appears there was an exchange of gunfire between the two that resulted in the victim being struck and later pronounced (dead),” Houston police Lt. Christopher Bruce told KTRK.

So the "good guy" with a gun shows up and look what happens. While the hostages are obviously relieved that they weren't harmed, the final result is a dead hero.

Sorry, but Texas can expect more of this -- both the crime, and the dead "hero.". He was only 17, ffs!

My sincerest condolences to the boy's family. He did not deserve to die for his naive belief in Republican macho propaganda.

I was trained from the time I was 7 by my father, who had been trained by the military. At 8 I joined the Boy Scouts (never was molested, they were great where I was) and went on to win the marksmanship award for my age group

Went into the Army when I was 19, and was trained by the military how to use a gun. If you fucked up, you were lucky if you didn't get a concussion. Went to advanced training with the Army and learned much, much more how to use a gun. If you couldn't learn, you were kicked back to be a grunt.

These STUPID FUCKING RIGHT WING LEGISLATURES AND GOVERNORS need to at least go to basic training and learn how to use a gun correctly.

NOBODY WHO HASN'T BEEN TRAINED BY PROFESSIONALS, SHOULD EVER BE ALLOWED TO CARRY A GUN!

I have never ever used a gun, which means I probably have no idea whatsoever at how much I don't know about them, especially about using them.

If you want to exercise your right, get trained and get a license. It's that friggin' simple.

Republicans are all about requiring ID's and crap to exercise the RIGHT to VOTE, and they still claim the right is not infringed. So what's the big deal about having some f***n' requirements to exercise the RIGHT to BEAR ARMS? Voting doesn't kill anyone, so there should actually be more hurdles to owning a gun than there are for casting a vote, because voting can't accidentally rob someone of that OTHER RIGHT -- to LIFE.

though I'd suggest that sometimes voting does result in people being killed.

might be tempted to try, like the teen on the OP, if confronted with an emergency.

I have never held or fired a hand gun. Many decades ago, I dated a man who liked to hunt. He taught me how to use a 22 rifle and a 12 guage shotgun for target shooting. I never fired either gun at a living being, only at stationary targets. It was so long ago that I doubt that I would remember how to load and aim either gun today. I know even less about hand guns and have never owned a gun myself.

a gun, the police would have handled it and the teenager would be alive today.

On the other hand, the criminal holding people hostage was firing his gun inside and threatening to kill the hostages. I can understand the impulse of a teen seeing a life and death emergency and wanting to help. The teen might have survived if he had immediately shot the hostage taker instead of just pointing his own gun and ordering the hostage taker to release the hostages.

But he was just a kid, not trained to quickly think through a strategy. I don't think that he put the hostages in any greater danger than they were already in. In the end, he possibly did save the lives of the people inside the store, but at the cost of his own life.

Since the hostage taker was saying to call the police, it sounds like he wanted to set up a standoff in order to make some kind of demand. The 17 year old did not know what he was dealing with or how to handle it.
