O'Rourke promises Medicaid expansion

NACOGDOCHES -- Democrat Beto O’Rourke promised supporters that if elected governor he would “keep the power on when the people of Texas need it most,” by weatherizing the state’s energy grid and increase access to health care by expanding Medicaid.

O’Rourke is the highest profile Democrat seeking to unseat Republican Greg Abbott, who faces primary challengers amid inter-party skirmishes. He blamed Abbott directly for failing to winterize the state’s power grid after major winter storms in 2011 and 2014.

“How could we not keep the power going for the people who needed it?” he said, noting the irony that Texas is considered the energy capital of the world.

Keeping power flowing to customers “should be the lowest bar for any government,” O’Rourke said, but millions of people were without power during February’s winter storms.
