After governors veto, parents now must opt-in for students to learn about dating violence, child abuseby Eleanor Klibanoff, Texas Tribune
School districts in Texas are now required to teach students about dating violence, family violence, child abuse and sex trafficking after a new law went into effect in early December.
But advocates are concerned that a last-minute change to the laws language means the children who need the information the most, will be the least likely to get it.
In June, Gov. Greg Abbott vetoed the original version of the bill over concerns that it didnt allow parental involvement. During the second special session, legislators passed a revamped version of the law that included Abbotts input.
Parents are now required to sign a permission slip for their students to be educated on these subjects, raising concerns that children who may be experiencing abuse at the hands of a parent will be excluded from receiving information that could help them.

(15,115 posts)When my daughter had appendicitis in seventh grade and I took her to the emergency room (at 2 in the morning, of course), the nurse made sure I was across the room from her and she very quietly asked my daughter if she felt safe at home.
I thought that was great.
She had her appendix removed and all was well, but kids in jeopardy need a chance to get safe.

(112,232 posts)While some discretion should be exercised to avoid traumatizing the youngest students, I don't believe that hiding children from the truth is a wise decision.
I recall when I was 11 or 12 years old and went to visit a friend who was the son of a principal. My friend's father literally beat the hell out of my friend for what was a minor offense. I was uncomfortable with what occurred even though I was young, but by the standards used today that beating crossed the line into child abuse and I would feel obligated to report it. Of course, the only people that I really had available to speak with about the beating would have been my parents and my father wouldn't have interfered.

(24,504 posts)practice's it quite frequently. The worse the sin, the harder the hit. Given where Abbott and DeSantis are taking their states, I wonder why smarter people aren't voting with their feet.
They don't seem to give a shit about infrastructure.
They think they know better than a woman and her Dr.
They are hostile to open education.
And they want to make this the only Party you can vote for.
I really don't know what their social endgame is, but it is going to be brutal for the remaining poorest minorities in their states,
