This editorial is part of the Dallas Morning News editorial boards slate of recommendations for the 2022 primary.Attorney Susan Hays believes the Texas agriculture commissioner seat could be the only statewide political office occupied by a Democrat after this falls general election. She might be right. Incumbent Sid Miller is vulnerable, with flagging support from his party and from the agriculture industry he represents. But if Democrats want to flip that seat or any other, they should choose the candidate who is capable of winning the broad middle. That would be Hays opponent, Ed Ireson.
Ireson, 34, is a Brazos County cattle rancher. Hes running on a platform focused on the next generation. The Texas Department of Agriculture oversees the school lunch program, and Ireson wants to create better collaborations between that program and Texas producers. Ireson said he reviewed the Houston ISD school lunch program and discovered that it relies heavily on a California distributor. If the job is to promote Texas agriculture, why on earth are we outsourcing it? he said.
He also wants to use TDA grants and incentives to boost infrastructure development in rural communities, particularly digital infrastructure.
Our rural communities are being left behind, Ireson said. He wants to boost digital access so that children in rural Texas dont believe they have to move to the big cities for a better future.
