Attorneys who helped design Texas’ novel abortion ban have asked a judge to allow them to depose the leaders of two abortion funds, seeking information about anyone who may have “aided or abetted” in a prohibited procedure.

For nearly six months, as Texas’ novel abortion law has wended its way through the courts, abortion providers and opponents have been locked in a stalemate.

The law, known as Senate Bill 8, empowers private citizens to sue anyone who “aids or abets” an abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy. With one exception as soon as the law went into effect, abortion providers in Texas have stopped performing these prohibited procedures — so opponents haven’t tried to bring one of these enforcement suits.

But that could be changing. A group of anti-abortion lawyers have taken steps to potentially bring lawsuits under SB 8, claiming in state court petitions that the leaders of two abortion funds have information about illegal abortions they helped patients procure.

This is a significant escalation on the part of abortion opponents, who have so far seemed satisfied with the chilling effect that even just the threat of lawsuits has had on abortion providers and their affiliates.

If the fund is getting money from outside the state or securing services from companies outside the state that's interstate commerce. States have no jurisdiction on interstate commerce transactions.

I'm assuming this covers nonprofits.

Someone who's smarter than me should be able to figure out if there's a way for folks to protest this state's shenanigans by doing something that costs the state resources. Maybe if we flood their abortion hotlines with information requests like, please send me a paper copy of you statue along with a FAQ that will sap them or funds (to pay for postage).

If my employer didn't pay me, I would have had no money to give. If my investments didn't earn money, I would not have donated. If my neighbor hadn't purchased that item at my yard sale...

Whose sole duty was to keep microscopic tabs on every single rethug in a position of authority and their wives. I feel certain that there would be ample fodder for using this law against them. Remember, they do not want to remove abortion from the land, they want to make sure the flow of wage slaves does not stop. That and be domineering asshats because gawd said so. There has to be many ways to turn this stupid law back on itself. Has any of the rethug elite had an abortion in the past? They are conspirators. Did any of them ever give to an organization that also either gave to or promoted such procedures? Sue the f**k out of them! Hell, flood the Texas court system with so many of these suits that they will never dig themselves out of it. Then, start suing them for a breech of the 6th Amendment. Something.

6. It is not about abortion. It is about control.

Top Republicans don't care if someone aborts a fetus. They care about keeping a highly emotional in front of the people to keep them distracted from other issues that the Republicans do care about like money and the power that it buys. Republicans stir up emotional issues that appeal to the Christian right, using the issues as a mask and shield. It is a brilliant strategy, Republicans recruit God to cover for them, because it works.
