Abramoff, Scanlon have repaid El Paso's Tiguas $200,000

El Paso's Tigua Indians have been receiving some restitution from two men convicted of fleecing the tribe out of millions of dollars nearly a decade ago.

Lobbyist Jack Abramoff and public relations consultant Michael Scanlon both pleaded guilty to charges that they bilked their Native American clients, including the Tiguas, out of more than $40 million. Each man was ordered as part of their sentences to repay more than $20 million to their formal tribal clients, including $1.85 million to the Tiguas.

Abramoff served almost four years in prison before his release in 2010, and in November released an autobiography, "Capitol Punishment: The Hard Truth About Washington Corruption From America's Most Notorious Lobbyist."

Scanlon's sentence was delayed for several years as he cooperated with prosecutors in an ongoing investigation of congressional corruption. That allowed him to continue working and make contributions to his court-ordered restitution.

Still, it's good that it's happening.

I've seen Abramoff on TV recently, and he genuinely seems repentant and trying to reverse the immense damage that he did while he was a Republican bagman.

2. Wish the stealing cheating banks would be forced to repay their victims too

The restitution plan for both Abramoff and Scanlon calls on them to pay 10 percent of their first $50,000 in annual income to the restitution fund for their clients; 20 percent of their income between $50,000 and $100,000; and 30 percent of income more than $100,000.

The funds are paid to the victims on a pro rata basis. The Tiguas have claim to about 8 percent of Abramoff's court-ordered restitution and 9 percent of Scanlon's.

And Goldman Sachs and their ilk on wall street should have their charters revoked. A death penalty of sorts to corporations who repeatedly break the law. Three strikes and you're out and all your CEOs/top management types like Mitt Romney etc are barred from that profession for a minimum of 5 years!

Just look at the head we have in the RNC clown car. They have more baggage than American Airlines. Can't beleive what we are seeing coming out of the RNC nominations. Every One of them except a couple should be doing hard time. What is this country coming to when we select delegates like these guys... Wow

6. I hear you

It really is seriously messed up when people who steal millions or billions, get light sentences and then become TV personalities and continue to plunder and pillage other people's money. In other words they get rewarded royally for bad behavior. While the common criminals who steals smaller amounts get harsh sentences, get sent to real jails (not country club jails) and have their lives ruined forever. They have no chance of redemption or rebuilding their lives - never mind getting rich.

We certainly have two classes of criminals in our justice system - and one of them - the very rich or well connected hardly ever pays the same penalty that the rest of us would.
