State lawmakers are targeting those brave pet owners who may choose lions and tigers over dogs and cats, saying exotic animals may not be safe companions.
A measure sponsored by state Rep. Ryan Guillen and Sen. Eddie Lucio would prohibit the private ownership of big cats and certain primates, such as chimpanzees and baboons in counties with populations exceeding 75,000.
Lucio said more children have been injured by captive big cats in Texas than any other state. The Humane Society of the United States said the state has one of the worst records in the country, with 22 people who dead and almost 500 injured since 1990 with incidents involving captive wild animals.
"Texas' law needs to prevent people from keeping dangerous animals in their backyards and basements," Lucio said. "These animals are not intended to be pets. They deserve the care and respect that can only be provided by professional facilities."

(13,468 posts)1. Brave pet owners?
More like people with issues who force wild animals to live in miserable, cramped conditions, endangering their own families and their neighborhoods for their own selfish satisfaction.

A few years ago because he father let her feed the caged tiger he had. No pun intended. It was horrible.
There is no excuse for private ownership of these animals. It's irresponsible.
