Prescott edges past Scherlen in Amarillo Place 3 runoff

Challenger David Prescott narrowly defeated incumbent Tom Scherlen in the Amarillo City Council Place 3 runoff election, winning by just 51 votes, according to unofficial results released Saturday evening.

Combined totals from Potter and Randall counties show Prescott received 4,660 votes (50.3%) to Scherlen’s 4,609 (49.7%). Total voter turnout for the runoff was 9,269.

“It’s very gratifying and incredibly humbling that the people of Amarillo believe in me,” Prescott said after the results were announced. “I love this city. I’ve been here 35 years, and now it’s time to get to work.”

In Potter County, Prescott earned 1,159 early votes and 530 on Election Day. In Randall County, he picked up 2,117 early votes and 854 on Election Day. Scherlen trailed closely, with 1,007 early votes and 452 on Election Day in Potter County, along with 2,282 early votes and 868 on Election Day in Randall County.
