Exide Technologies is preparing for a potential bankruptcy-protection filing by this summer, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing unnamed sources.

Exide, with operations in more than 80 countries, is involved in an extensive cleanup of contamination related to its shuttered plant in Frisco. City of Frisco officials said Thursday they are monitoring the situation. In the meantime, they said, work continues toward permanent closure of the Frisco site. State and federal regulators are overseeing that work.
A settlement agreement calls for Frisco to buy about 170 acres of buffer property from Exide once cleanup is complete. Exide is tapping into $6 million set aside for demolition and cleanup as part of that agreement. A total cost for the project has not been released.

Exide doesnt have the money to provide a first-rate cleanup in Frisco, and we cant rely on EPA to do a timely clean-up under the Superfund program, said Jim Schermbeck, the groups director. Only the city of Frisco has the motivation to properly clean up and reclaim the Exide property instead of letting it become one of the regions largest toxic waste dumps. We need the city to tell residents how they plan to return the Exide site to normal use.

(61,695 posts)of bond isn't required before operations like that start.
Yeah, only Frisco has the motivation not to live in a toxic waste dump. Exide doesn't give a damn.

(112,252 posts)I tried doing a little background research about the place when I posted and I believe that Exide had acquired the property and was manufacturing batteries prior to anyone knowing that lead was toxic. I recall that in my youth I used to play with both lead and mercury so I wouldn't doubt that it may have done damage to my central nervous system, but there are a few other substances that I have handled that may have impacted my CNS also. The full details will be made available for inquiring minds sometime in the future, but only after I'm deceased.

(61,695 posts)a lot about how this came to be.
Yeah, mercury thermometers were easily mishandled by kids. Virtually impossible to get now.
I'm ready to go back to sleep. I can sleep in this morning, but my internal clock awakened me.
