21 dead geese found along Northeast Kingdom lake

BARTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Wildlife experts are investigating what happened to a flock of geese in the Northeast Kingdom after 21 were found dead at Crystal Lake State Park in Barton last week.

Josh Degreenia and his friend, Larry Allard, were there with metal detectors, looking for coins or maybe a gold ring. They say the shore was lined with bird cadavers.

“I’m 35 years old and I’ve never seen anything like this in Vermont,” Degreenia said. “There was one that was still alive, but it wasn’t moving,” Allard said. “It just had its head up, so you knew something had happened.”

David Sausville with Vermont Fish and Wildlife says they’ve never had anything like this happen among the Canadian goose population in Vermont, though, he says there was a similar situation in New Hampshire this spring where roughly 30 geese died from the avian flu.

But I decided I wasn't so sure about my info so I looked it up and I was wrong about the why part.

The official name for any bird is its Latin name. So, the “real” name for this creature is Branta canadensis. That’s because the bird probably has 200 different names in 200 different languages, based on its colors, its sounds, its habitat, or many other reasons.

Birds get named after people, after habits, after all sorts of things. The Latin name is the same around the world for that bird.

Canada goose is the common name for the species Branta canadensis. So, it is correct to call this bird “Canada goose” and not correct to call it “Canadian goose.”

A Canadian goose could be any goose from Canada. It’s confusing, I know. But it really bugged me that that lady kept saying, “Look at all the Canadian geese!”

5. I wondered if a Canada Goose that did NOT migrate back to Canada, would have to renounce

its citizenship, and be known simply as, 'Goose'.

Avian flu? It’s been in other places in the country. They blame migration of birds.
