Gloucester County files brief challenging April 21 Virginia special election

GLOUCESTER, Va. — Gloucester County leaders are taking their concerns about a proposed state constitutional amendment to the Commonwealth's highest court.

On April 8, County Attorney Edwin N. “Ted” Wilmot filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court of Virginia, asking justices to find a planned April 21 special election unconstitutional.

The filing, directed by the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors, supports appellees in an ongoing case tied to a proposed amendment that would allow the out-of-cycle redistricting.

In the 10-page brief, the county argues the election is invalid for three main reasons: timing, wording and effect.
