Down to the closing minutes of evidence Thursday in the federal corruption trial of former Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, the focus was on the state of the couple's relationship.
That has been central to the defense mounted by the McDonnells' attorneys, who say their marriage was so dysfunctional that they were incapable of conspiring together in a corrupt scheme to promote businessman Jonnie Williams' products in exchange for more than $177,000 in loans, gifts and luxury vacations.
Over the final hour of testimony Thursday, attorneys questioned an FBI agent who analyzed the McDonnells' schedules for the prosecution and calculated how many nights they spent together.
Over a 22-month period from 2011 to 2013, Special Agent Kathryn Weber testified, the couple spent 90 percent of their nights together. That includes nights in the Governor's Mansion and trips on which the couple traveled together.
