In order to make this country more economically secure, it is essential that we prioritize quality education. We need to make adequate investments in early childhood learning and encourage our brightest young people to become teachers. We rely on educators to prepare our children for the world and our investment in education is a shortcoming.
The Commonwealth of Virginia is the 9th wealthiest state in the nation, and yet Virginia’s average teacher salary is $7,000 below the national average. We need to make teaching a more financially secure profession so that we can encourage the most talented individuals to become a Virginia educator. When paying our teachers well, it improves student academic performance, and attracts talented teachers to Virginia schools. Increasing teacher pay is a promising way to ensure a motivated force in education, while creating a higher incentive to remain in the profession.
As Americans face new challenges, we have a duty to work for a stronger, more secure nation at home and abroad. Strength and security at home means a strong economy. Middle class families, teachers, veterans, small business owners and the students who will become Virginia's economy are the engine that drives Virginia and America forward. Let us set aside the petty and fractured politics in Washington, and focus on how we can take action. Don’t let the procrastination in Washington spread to our Capitol. Virginians deserve common sense solutions and a world class education system. That is exactly what I will work for in the Senate.
