UVa lecturer apologizes for anti-BLM comments; protest planned at his restaurant

A University of Virginia lecturer who is on a leave this week after deriding the Black Lives Matter movement in a social media post issued a statement Wednesday, apologizing for comparing it to the Ku Klux Klan.

Responding to a Facebook post about a recent panel in Charlottesville that included Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza, UVa lecturer and Bella’s Restaurant owner Doug Muir wrote: “Black lives matter is the biggest rasist [sic] organisation [sic] since the clan [sic]. Are you kidding me. Disgusting!!!”

In a statement dated Oct. 11, Muir apologized for the post.

“I was wrong in my comparison and want to offer my profound apologies for my words. To my students, the University of Virginia, the citizens of Charlottesville and the thousands of responders, I am truly sorry. I have been saddened by the pain it has caused this wonderful community,” Muir said.
