Va. legislators' reports showing their gifts and stocks are now online

Forms filed by Virginia lawmakers that show gifts they’ve received, what companies they own stock in and who employs them and their immediate family members are online for the public to view.

The forms were traditionally kept on file at the offices of the House and Senate clerks. They’re online for the first time.

A change in the law in 2015 mandated that the forms be maintained in a searchable database available to the public on the website of the Virginia Conflict of Interest and Ethics Advisory Council. The council — which consists of lawmakers and other appointees — was created following the gifts scandal of former Gov. Bob McDonnell to offer formal and informal guidance and training on Virginia’s ethics laws.

The form, called a statement of economic interest, is now filed annually by lawmakers, and the newest forms were due Jan. 17.

I read elsewhere that the number and amount of gifts received by legislators has decreased. Maybe this law is a contributing factor.
