McAuliffe temporarily bars demonstrations at Lee monument in Richmond, citing public safety

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, citing safety concerns after the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, on Friday signed an executive order temporarily barring demonstrations at the Lee Monument in Richmond until the state approves and implements new emergency regulations.

The governor's office said McAuliffe will issue another executive order setting up a task force to be headed by Brian Moran the state secretary of public safety and homeland security. It will study "safety concerns that arose" from the violent rally in Charlottesville.

Within three months, the task force will make recommendations to the Department of General Services, which will craft the new emergency regulations. That time frame would put implementation of the new rules beyond the Nov. 7 election for governor.

"In spite of weeks of preparation, the city of Charlottesville was the target of an act of domestic terrorism that cost one woman her life, and had a helicopter accident led to the deaths of two state troopers,” McAuliffe said in a statement issued just before 5 p.m. on Friday.
