I might be totally off base, but I don't envision the officers' immediate reaction as "The officers immediately went to the man's aid." I think they immediately went after the evidence and he declined their "assistance." Then things went bad and they truly helped.
ETA: I'm not saying the police did anything wrong. I am talking about the wording of the press release.
Virginia State Police Press Release:
An investigation is underway into the death of a Waynesboro man that occurred July 6, 2018.
Shortly after 9 a.m. Friday, the Skyline Drug Task Force, with the assistance of the City of Waynesboro Police Departments SWAT Team, executed a search warrant at a residence in the 600 block of North Augusta Avenue.
Once the officers made an announced entry into the residence, they encountered a male subject forcing a bag filled with a white, powdery substance into his mouth. The officers immediately went to the man's aid, but he refused their repeated attempts to assist him with removing the bag lodged in his throat.
After the man lost consciousness, a Waynesboro Police detective began administering CPR and was able to regain a pulse until EMS arrived on scene. Despite the officers numerous rescue attempts and EMS response, the male subject was declared deceased upon his arrival at Augusta Health.
