Police: Newly purchased $300K sports car totaled in crash in Fairfax Co.

I suspect this is another victim of Great Falls's "Cars and Coffee."

GREAT FALLS, Va. (AP) — Police say a northern Virginia driver has totaled a newly purchased $300,000 sports car by driving too fast and hitting a tree.

Fairfax County Police on Saturday posted a photo on Facebook of a badly mangled McLaren 720s sports car leaning up against a relatively unscathed tree off the side of a two-lane road in Great Falls.

Purchased Friday. Totaled Saturday. This McLaren 720S, costing around $300,000, was destroyed today in Great Falls because of speed. The driver was taken to the hospital with thankfully only non-life threatening injuries. A reminder to slow down, or it could cost you.

Police said the driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. ... The Facebook post said the $300,000 import had just been purchased on Friday.

Police attributed the crash to excessive speed and reminded drivers to slow down.

Someone Bought a $300,000 McLaren 720S and Wrecked It the Next Day

On Saturday, someone crashed a roughly $300,000 McLaren 720S in Northern Virginia, not far from well-known car show Katie’s Cars and Coffee. The driver had apparently only owned the car for a single day.

“Purchased Friday. Totaled Saturday,” the Fairfax County Police tweeted this past weekend, along with a photo of the supercar up against a tree, with its driver’s side thoroughly mangled.

According to the tweet, the new owner of this McLaren 720S crashed in Great Falls, Virginia—not too far from the legendary Katie’s Cars and Coffee, a car show whose participants have been known to occasionally get into some car trouble. The incident left the driver with “non-life threatening injuries.”

The exact cause of the crash is unknown, with the police department simply saying it happened “because of speed,” implying that the driver might have lost control while driving faster than the limit. “A reminder to slow down, or it could cost you,” the tweet concludes.

Here’s a short video posted to YouTube by novacars and shared onto car forum 6speedonline, apparently showing that helicopter leaving the Cars and Coffee:

I’ve reached out to police and people in the local car community to learn more about the incident; I will update this post if I hear anything.

There are so many deer in the roads at this time of year. Everyone be careful and safe.

Yeah, could be. Too soon to say. FCPD will sort this out.

There was a fatal wreck not far from this one, last year, maybe? It was in the middle of the day, broad daylight, straight stretch of road. A lot of people were suggesting a deer hopped out in front of the car in that one.
