NASA Langley's 'Hidden Figures' nominated for Congressional Gold Medal

"...U.S. senate is considering a bill that would award the Congressional Gold Medal to Katherine Johnson and Christine Darden, and posthumously to Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan.
Katherine Moore, Johnson’s daughter, said her mother was thrilled to be recognized with her colleagues and friends. Much attention has been given to Johnson, who will turn 100 on Aug. 26, but she likes to stress that she was part of a team. She worked closely with Vaughan and Jackson, and has been a close friend of Darden for decades.

“She always says, ‘We did it together,’” Moore said. “They were for each other. Ms. Vaughan looked out for them and trained them — it really was one for all and all for one. They were the village for each other.”

If the women eventually receive the Congressional Gold Medal, it could go alongside the Presidential Medal of Freedom that Johnson was given by President Barack Obama.

The honor is sponsored by Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., and co-sponsored by 46 other senators, including Mark Warner and Tim Kaine of Virginia. For the women to receive the Congressional Gold Medal, the bill must be voted on by a committee, and then by the full Senate and the House of Representatives before ultimately going to the White House for President Donald Trump’s signature.
