Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for metro Richmond this afternoon
By JOHN BOYER Richmond Times-Dispatch 22 min ago

Heavy rain and a few severe thunderstorms are rumbling through the state this afternoon.

2:45 p.m. update:

Storms have arrived in metro Richmond, but so far everything nearby is staying below severe levels. We're not entirely out of the woods yet as far as severe weather, but the rain will get lighter by the late afternoon.

A broken line of storms between Washington and South Hill is strengthening as it moves east-northeast through the Piedmont.

Several severe thunderstorm warnings have been posted between Charlottesville, Fredericksburg and Washington over the past hour due to the threat of damaging 60 mph winds.

As of 2:45 p.m., one tornado warning was in effect for Reston and the northwestern side of the Washington metro area.
