UPDATE: 17 coronavirus cases in Virginia; Northam declares state of emergency
From staff reports 1 hr ago
Virginia now has 17 presumptive cases of novel coronavirus, state officials said Thursday.
That number is double what the state had reported yesterday, prompting Gov. Ralph Northam to declare a state of emergency across the state.
The two most recent cases are related to two Virginians who tested positive in Texas, and remain in that state.
We are working with Texas to determine the best course of action, Northam said.
Northam said that given mixed messages from federal health officials, the state is assuming more leadership over the mitigation of COVID-19, including the pursuit of its own test.
Virginias testing capacity right now is limited at 500 tests given test kit shortages at the Centers for Disease Control, the federal arm producing COVID-19 tests nationwide.
