We Demand This Fraud Be Stopped: Repeal "Right to Work" in Virginia

Living in a so-called “Right to Work” state might sound like a good thing. It might sound like Virginia workers have some special rights, a leg up on workers from non “Right to Work” states. I grew up in Virginia, and that’s what I thought it meant when I heard the slogan the first hundred times. The phrase is so benign, I didn’t question it until a few years ago. And the more I learn about this issue, the more complex it becomes. It’s much bigger than a misleading slogan.

My takeaway from Our Revolution Virginia’s virtual “Repeal Right to Work” event is that this seemingly innocuous phrase has been used to manipulate citizens into giving up their rights. The law might more aptly be called “the right to work for less” and has disturbingly racist, even white supremacist origins. Notably, Virginia is the only blue state among 27 “Right to Work” states.

Note: This is very personal to me, as I grew up in a pretty heavily unionized state but spent most of my working life in whet my late ex called a "right to slave" state.

in my area in Tennessee that was unionized, at least by nurses. They had a nurse:patient ratio of 1:4 which no other hospital in the area had. During my (very brief) time doing agency work I got called to work there a few times. So much better than other places! My two good friends worked there a lot and loved it.

OTOH, when I was interviewing for my very first job out of nursing school there, I was told that if I was even caught talking union, I would be immediately fired. Since Tennessee is a "right to slave" state, I assumed that was not illegal. I could be wrong about that but I don't think so. I never heard that anywhere else.
