Renton police officer accused of slapping, groping woman; charged with assault
The Renton police officer accused of slapping and groping a woman Saturday in a Des Moines park was formally charged Wednesday in King County Superior Court.
Prosecutors filed one count of fourth-degree assault with sexual motivation and one count of abuse of office against Tanuj Soni, 30, an officer with the Renton Police Department. He was arrested Saturday by the Des Moines Police Department, booked into King County Jail and released two days later by a King County District Court judge, charging papers said.
On Saturday morning, Soni allegedly told a woman to meet him at Cecil Powell Neighborhood Park in Des Moines to go over her case. Her friend drove her, dropped her off and she talked with Soni at a picnic table.
They were drinking wine and Soni told the woman it was important for her to keep drinking so he could get the answers he needed for the case, probable cause documents said. They drank for a couple of hours and Soni asked her to take off her clothes. After she did, he allegedly began slapping her face and buttocks.
She told police that when he began slapping harder she asked him to stop, but he kept doing it and started grabbing her genitals.
When he stopped, she started crying and putting her clothes back on. Soni said they should get a motel room and as she pretended to look for one, she tried to call her friend. When he suspected her moving away he said "Get back here now," and she ran off.
