Everett Mall Sears to close by December, company says

EVERETT — It was one of the first anchor stores at Everett Mall. Now, after a half-century, the city’s Sears will close by the end of the year.

“After careful review, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to close the Sears stores in Everett and Aberdeen, Washington,” Larry Costello, public relations director for Sears and Kmart, confirmed in an email Wednesday. “The liquidation sales are expected to begin in mid-September and the stores are planned to close by mid-December. We encourage customers to continue shopping on Sears.com for all their product needs.”

Employees at the Everett Sears location declined to comment.

On Wednesday afternoon, inside the more than 100,000-square-foot store, a handful of shoppers drifted through the well-stocked aisles.

Sears at one time operated hundreds of department stores throughout the U.S. and Canada. The once-venerable retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last fall. In the past few years, it has closed hundreds of stores. Sears Canada, a subsidiary, closed all its stores in 2017.

Founded in 1893, the Chicago-based retailer sells everything from bathrobes to kitchen appliances. The company stopped distributing its huge, mail order catalogs in 1993.

Transform Holdco, a company that was formed in February to acquire Sears Holdings assets, announced last month it planned to close 26 Sears and Kmart stores around the county, including the Sears in Spokane.

Transform is owned by ESL Investments a Greenwich, Connecticut-based hedge fund.

My Dad got all of his tools from there, in fact I have a bunch of them still to this day. Mom took us there for school clothes because she said they had quality at a good price. Think of all of the Sears kit houses that are in towns and cities all over the country. Really really sad.

As much as it's fun to dump on big, nasty, ol' corporations, Sears was a large part of the making of modern America. Was once a time you could be in the middle of a prairie and order everything from a pair of socks to a kitchen stove from the Sears Catalog.

And then "recycle" the catalog in the outhouse.

Eddie Lampert's name should be dragged through the mud. Eddie himself should be dragged through the mud. His ESL hedge fund bought Sears and sold off its best parts, largely to himself, then left the carcass to rot. The local Sears folded years ago, but the KMart was still a great place with the best values around-- better than WalMart half of the time. But it was a dingy rathole with bad lighting, damaged walls and ceilings, and lousy displays. Then vendors started bowing out. Then it closed. Throughout all this, the Target a mile away was always crowded and expanded, and the WalMart moved to a store twice the size and was still crowded.

I still have a kitchen full of Kenmore appliances, we put them in when we did some work on the kitchen a few years ago. They are not of the quality they used to be, everything is like Bic Lighters, disposable, not meant to last.

I agree about Eddie Lampert, he should be drawn and quartered on the town square. He had no intention of saving the company and those jobs.

got their walking papers Thursday Night. Under Illinois Law,there is a requirement of State Notification as to Lay offs so these folks were given a severance pack in order to comply with State Laws. No warning given to these workers at all.
