2,200 lightning strikes overnight in Western Wash.; just under 1,000 still out of power in Seattle
The rare thunder and lightning that swept across Western Washington Saturday night wreaked havoc, including a delayed PAC-12 matchup and thousands without power -- even into Sunday afternoon.
Less than 10 minutes into the opening quarter of the Huskies' bout with the California Golden Bears, the skies opened up across the Puget Sound area. Torrential rain wasn't the only guest of the night; thunder and lightning cracked and flashed throughout Western Washington, sending the players off the field and shutting out power for some Seattleites.
Between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m., Saturday, about 2,200 lightning strikes touched down in Western Washington, the National Weather Service tweeted. That worked out to almost eight a minute.
Over 5,000 Seattle City Light customers were affected Saturday night and as of 6:08 p.m. Sunday, 982 were still without power. City Light said the outage areas were scattered, making it hard to fix issues immediately.
