Saying it's 'Moving Forward,' SDOT axes $52 million Seattle streetcar contract
The Seattle Department of Transportation canceled a $52 million streetcar contract Monday, putting up a brave face with a news announcement entitled: "Moving Forward with the Center City Connector Streetcar Project."
The contract with CAF USA, signed in April of 2017, was to build 10 streetcars for the planned, delayed downtown trolley.
Instead, SDOT will hire a consultant. The department said it will "search for a consultant to help complete this facilities engineering work and will release a request for qualifications for engineering consultants in the coming weeks."
The current cost estimate for the Central City Connector is $286 million, more than double the intial pricetag when the project was announced four years ago. The cost estimate has gone up by $88 million in the past two years.
