MUKILTEO Only one year to go.
Out of the construction rubble and dust, the much-awaited, overbudget ferry terminal finally is taking shape.
The long, low two-story structure with a high, sloping roof is starting to look like the picture of the artists rendering.
After years of debate, setbacks, revisions and a bunch of money $187 million and change the terminal is on track to open in the fall of 2020.
October of next year, right around Halloween, Washington State Ferries spokeswoman Diane Rhodes said.
On a hardhat tour Wednesday, Rhodes explained whats to come under the sloped roof, which will be solar-paneled.
Walk-on passengers will board on the top floor while vehicles load from the car deck below.
The terminal will offer a majestic view of the water and surrounding islands.

(2,120 posts)....on the transaction. The state now charges an extra tax to support the ferry system, not just on license plates, but also on the required filing of a report sale for a vehicle. The seller pays this fee for going online and telling the state that he has sold a vehicle titled in Washington. I really don't mind paying to support the ferries, even though the closest one is 260 miles from my house and I haven't used one in twenty years. This is a progressive state that does a good job with infrastructure. The east side of the state pays for the west's ferries and they pay for the damage our studded snow tires do every winter.

(12,154 posts)Thats a super short ferry ride, but heavily used as I understand it maybe because Deception Pass State Park is so popular. And Whidbey Island has many other charms as well. Fantastic place to visit.
Hope this new ferry terminal is a welcome addition to the community.

(6,530 posts)Homes are still more affordable on Whidbey than on the east side and people commute across.
That run is packed and part of the problem has always been that the Mukilteo terminal is far too small and slow to load, so the overload backs up into local traffic. Same with the Fauntleroy terminal.
Hope the new terminal makes a difference!
