Despite the formal urging from the Seattle City Council, Seattle Public Schools will not excuse students from being absent if they participate in Friday's Global Climate Strike.
The decision was announced in a letter Tuesday addressed to the Council from Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Denise Juneau. The letter was a response to Councilmember Kshama Sawant's letter Monday to Juneau and the Seattle School Board asking them to "please excuse students on Sept. 20" for the student and city employee walkouts planned across the country.
"Contrary to what Superintendent Juneau suggests in her letter to City Council, the school district's own rules allow for excused absences if the district was to decide that it was community activity worthy of being excused," Sawant said Wednesday in an emailed statement.
New York City schools said they would excuse absences Friday, something mentioned by the Council and written in the subject line of an email from Sawant in the form of "Follow NYC's Lead!"
Sawant and the rest of the Council passed a resolution Monday that urged Seattle Public Schools to support its students' right to assemble.
