Kshama Sawant debates Egan Orion. Class struggle or Council workhorse?

Class struggle is the never-ending theme of militant socialist Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant, and was displayed at the beginning, middle and end of Thursday night's District 3 debate with challenger Egan Orion.

"The establishment in this city is corporate minded," Sawant concluded, vowing to "not turn Seattle into a playground for the wealthy." Cheers came from those who heed her tweets: "Pack City Hall!"

Orion, best know as organizer of the Capitol Hill Pride festival, promised to be a workhorse rather than a show horse. "The residents of District 3 need a Council member who will show up, listen, and work collaboratively to solve district problems," he argued.

The contest in District 3 is the marquee race in a seminal municipal election. It promises to be the most expensive City Council contest in Seattle history, with business groups backing Orion and out-of-state donations pouring into Sawant's coffers.

District 3 consists of the Central Area, Capitol Hill, much of First Hill, Madison Park and Madrona.
