Gun humpers launch initiative bid to repeal Initiative 1639
Firearms enthusiasts in eastern Washington have launched an initiative campaign to repeal Initiative 1639, the measure passed by voters last November that raises the minimum age for purchase of semiautomatic assault rifles from 18 to 21 and imposes a 10-day waiting period.
"I'm pretty certain they know it's going to be challenging. It's serious alright -- this sort of sprang up without warning," Dave Workman, a pro-gun rights writer who broke the story in Ammoland Shooting Sports News, wrote in an e-mail.
The sponsors need to come up with 300,000 valid voter signatures by Jan. 3, 2020 to win a place on the state's 2020 ballot.
I-1639 passed with 59.35% of the vote last November. It carried two counties, Spokane and Whitman, in Eastern Washington. The National Rifle Association opposed the measure but did not spend heavily to defeat it.
The organizer of the initiative campaign, John Valle, publisher of The American Patriot, told Workman: "Every Patriot group is on board and I've got 23 gun shop owners in eastern Washington who will put it in their shop."
