Amazon and Microsoft are spending big to fight I-976, Tim Eyman's plan to cut car-tab fees
Amazons injection of $1.45 million into Seattles municipal races has generated headlines and in some cases, protests in the final days leading up to Tuesdays election.
But the tech company has received less attention for its key role in another political effort: the statewide fight to defeat Initiative 976, which would cut car-tab fees in Washington state to a flat $30.
I-976 is the latest brainchild of Tim Eyman, the prolific initiative promoter. According to a state fiscal analysis, passage of the measure would cause government agencies throughout Washington state to lose about $4 billion in funding for transportation projects over the next six years.
Eyman, meanwhile, says approval of the ballot measure would force agencies to reprioritize their spending, while removing taxes he characterizes as deceptive and unfair.
