McMorris Rodgers backs Paris Climate Accord pullout; Wash. Democrats dissent
The United States formally began withdrawal from the 2015 Paris Climate Accord on Monday, a decision which drew outrage from Democratic members of Washington's congressional delegation, but a tweet of support from Republican U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers.
"To beat China, this is the right decision," McMorris Rodgers said. "The Paris Accord put us at a competitive disadvantage in the global economy." McMorris Rodgers is a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
The global accord intends to limit the rise of greenhouse gas emissions which are causing climate change. China is the world's largest emitter of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The U.S. ranks second.
Rep. Derek Kilmer, D-Wash., used a personal example from his childhood in arguing that American is forfeiting a leadership role in dealing with the world's climate crisis.
"When I was growing up, my soccer coach talked about the importance of being in the game," Kilmer said in a statement. "It's shameful that when it comes to the climate challenger our world faces, the U.S. is going from being a captain to riding the bench, by pulling out of the Paris Agreement."
The decision by President Donald Trump to quit the Paris Accord, made against advice from senior Cabinet secretaries, is a victory for selfishness, Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said.
