Thousands could die if tsunami hits Washington coast, state wants to build a solution

Experts say it’s not "if" but "when" the Big One will hit. And when it does, a 9.0 magnitude Cascadia earthquake will severely damage cities. But it’s the tsunami that could kill thousands.

Simulations show the tsunami crashing into Washington’s coast and flowing through Puget Sound. It could resemble the 2011 tsunami in Japan, which killed more than 20,000 people and destroyed almost everything in its path.

“It’s going to mean significant damage to infrastructure, a significant loss of life, and some serious injuries,” Corina Forson told KOMO.

Forson is the chief hazards geologist at the Washington Geological Survey.

“It’s a very startling picture to paint,” Forson said.
