Big money pouring into orca recovery efforts in Puget Sound

With a dwindling orca population in Puget Sound, scientists announced Wednesday that more than a million dollars is now going toward new research to help the Southern Resident killer whales -- studies that otherwise wouldn't be possible.

Experts say that now is more important than ever to rescue the endangered Southern Resident orcas.

“Understanding the details of where they go, what they’re eating and what sort of habitat they’re using is an important question that we’re trying to answer," said Michael Ford, Director of the Conservation Biology Division for the Northwest Fishery Science Center.

Several agencies, including the NOAA, Shell, and SeaWorld, partnered to give more than $600,000 to six different organizations. Those grants were matched with total funds adding up to $1.2 million.
