Murray, Cantwell: Senate trial should see evidence, hear witnesses
The Senate impeachment trial of President Donald Trump should hear from witnesses and see up-to-date evidence, and not be held in the "dead of night," Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., argued Tuesday, pushing back on restrictive rules written by Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
"Leader McConnell has explicitly said 'no' to impartial justice in spite of the careful and thorough investigation the House conducted and in spite of President Trump's unprecedented stonewalling and continued refusal to provide any credible defense against the allegations against him," Murray, a member of the Democratic leadership, told a morning new conference. Murray voted to acquit President Bill Clinton at the 1999 impeachment trial.
McConnell did make minor concessions, but has continued to say no to witnesses, which were heard two decades ago at the Clinton impeachment trial.
Instead of giving just 48 hours in four days for both sides to make their case, McConnell gave Democratic prosecutors and Trump defenders 24 hours over three days. He agreed not to automatically eliminate evidence gathered by the House.
