Durkan on state of Seattle: 'Strong and Resilient,' but not without challenges
The state of Seattle is "strong and resilient," but the city still has work to do to address challenges including homelessness, public safety and climate change, Mayor Jenny Durkan said Tuesday.
During the annual State of the City address, Durkan took her usual optimistic approach, pointing to progress Seattle has made and continues to make to improve the lives of people across the region.
"In the last two years, together we have taken bold action to make our progressive values real in peoples lives. Because of our shared actions and commitment, I can tell you today the state of our city is strong and resilient," Durkan said during the address, held at Rainier Arts Center. "Yes, we have challenges. But we have the values, the talent, and the determination to meet them. It is important to remember that progress is rarely easy. It often means setbacks. And progress takes the tireless work, commitment and the remarkable vision of remarkable people."
Durkan highlighted several steps she said the city has taken to advance its values, including investing in more affordable housing, advancing public safety and providing more opportunities to young people in the city. She talked about policies the city has pushed for including giving Uber and Lyft drivers minimum wage and more benefits and connecting students to paid summer internships and scholarship opportunities for college.
