Murray, leaders 'deeply alarmed' by Pentagon secrecy over military coronavirus cases
BREMERTON U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Washington, has joined a growing chorus of voices pushing back against the Pentagon's blanket ban on disclosing coronavirus cases at installations like Naval Base Kitsap and the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
Murray said efforts to "flatten the curve" and keep military members and civilians safe require not only "rigorous" data collection but also transparency from all parts of government, including the military.
"So I am deeply alarmed by the Defense Departments decision that will seemingly leave many of our service members, military families, community members and more without the information they need to protect themselves and others and stay healthy," she said.
Murray's sentiments follow those of Steve Anderson, former executive director of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard from 1997 to 2004, who said last week that the move by the Pentagon would fuel "distrust in government."
