Boeing suppliers in Tacoma, Everett hit by hundreds of layoffs in aerospace sector pause
Major Boeing suppliers located in the northern and southern Puget Sound region warned the state they might be making a total of 435 temporary layoffs, the Washington state Employment Security Department said Monday.
Toray Composite Materials America, Inc., of Tacoma, laid off 361 workers starting April 9, the state agency said in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice.
Toray America expects its layoffs will be temporary, the state agency reported. The company could not immediately be reached for additional information through any of its listed phone numbers, but its parent is warning of losses.
Tory, a unit of the Japanese giant materials manufacturer Toray, supplies all the composite materials used for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner's wing and other composite parts of aircraft. It may be forced to make some of those temporary layoffs permanent if Boeing further cuts Dreamliner production amid a global airline industry recession.
