Gonzlez punts on mayor's request to investigate Sawant
Seattle City Council President M. Lorena González said she will not investigate Councilmember Kshama Sawant and possibly expel her for "disorderly or otherwise contemptuous behavior," as Mayor Jenny Durkan requested on June 30.
Sawant, however, does face charges by the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission (SEEC) for allegedly using her official office and equipment to promote a ballot initiative for her "Amazon Tax." It's one one of the charges Durkan raised in her letter to González.
SEEC Executive Director Wayne Barnett said a hearing will be scheduled when the commission can meet in person after Covid-19 restrictions lift.
Sawant will not be kicked off the council, however. "The commission can only fine. We have no power to remove," Barnett said.
