Our state's "Democrats" are being awfully wobbly on Social Security cuts

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022381148
Only McDermott has signed the "no cuts" letter

And Murray is being pretty wobbly per the following letter. However, she is holding a town hall on lifeline cuts to collect stories of what impact these cuts would have on peoples' lives. 7pm 2/22 at the Labor Temple in Seattle. Be there or be square!

Thank you for contacting me regarding potential changes to the Social Security system and Cost-of-Living-Adjustments (COLA) for Social Security recipients. It was good to hear from you.

As you know, Social Security was created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1935 to address widespread poverty experienced by seniors during the Great Depression. Social Security provides retirees with a foundation of economic security, with almost 90 percent of people age 65 and older receiving some income from Social Security. With the average retiree benefit of $1,230 per month, or $14,760 a year, Social Security payments are by no means extravagant but they have provided America's seniors with vital protection against poverty. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly half of American seniors would live in poverty today without Social Security.

Social Security is a basic American value. It is a promise that if you work hard, you will have some security when you retire or if you become disabled. It is a safety net to keep seniors out of financial poverty. And it is a pledge that if your spouse or parent passes on, you will continue to have the support and security you need. Social Security is most often thought of as an earned retirement program, but it is also a comprehensive family insurance program, protecting families of deceased and disabled workers from sliding into poverty. Indeed, three in ten beneficiaries receive survivors' or disability insurance benefits.

Please know that I understand your concerns regarding the impact of deficit reduction legislation on Social Security benefits. I am committed to addressing our nation's debt and know that any deal will involve sacrifices from all sides. But I think that seniors and the middle class have sacrificed enough over the past few years, and any changes we make to programs they depend on should only be done in a way that works for beneficiaries, and protects and preserves key programs. While I am open to ways to strengthen Social Security, I know that it does not have to do with our debt and deficit problem and there is no reason for it to be wrapped up in this debate.

Again, thank you for contacting me about this important issue. If you would like to know more about my work in the Senate, please sign up for my weekly updates at http://murray.senate.gov/updates. Please keep in touch.

Sincerely,
Patty Murray
United States Senator

In Spokane, a coalition of folks from PDA, Peace and Justice Action League of Spokane, Veterans for Peace, SEIU and other groups will be meeting with Sen. Murray's staff at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19. If you want a story delivered, reply to this email with subject line STORY FOR SEN. MURRAY, and it will be printed and delivered. Calls to Sen Murray's Spokane office (509-624-9515) starting about 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and voicing support for our delegation and PDA's letter would be very helpful.

In Seattle a public event hosted by a large coalition will gather stories which will be delivered to the senator along with PDA's letter.

SOLVE THE BUDGET PUZZLE: SHARING OUR STORIES WITH REPRESENTATIVES

Seattle Labor Temple, 2800 1st Ave. Seattle, WA

7 TO 8:30 PM PARKING AND LIGHT REFRESHMENTS PROVIDED

This will be a free, public event where members of our community will share short, powerful stories about the impacts of the economic crash in their own communities. Our goal is to advocate for more funding for job creation, green energy, education, health care, and other human needs.

The event will be a powerful, action producing forum. As you may know, Sen. Murray is the chair of the Senate Budget Committee, has made public statements supporting cuts to the Pentagon while protecting human needs spending....... She is now in a powerful leadership position, and our local efforts have a real opportunity to shape the outcome of the ongoing Federal budget negotiations.

Groups that have come together for the initial delegation and now this forum include The Church Council of Greater Seattle, The Faith Action Network, American Friends Service Committee, Western Washington Fellowship of Reconciliation, GI Voice, Green Party of Washington State, Rainier Valley Neighbors for Peace and Justice, Veterans for Peace, Chapter 92, WA State Progressive Caucus, and West Seattle Neighbors for Peace and Justice.

I hope you'll be able to join us on the 22nd!
