SEATTLE (KOMO) Pointing to a growing number of COVID-19 outbreaks at grocery stores and supermarkets, one national union, including a chapter in Washington state, is pushing for those frontline workers to receive the vaccine as soon as possible.
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union, which represents more than 1.3 million workers in grocery and retail, reports that 116 grocery store workers have died due to the virus with another 20,000 infections. An outbreak this week at a Costco in Yakima has been tied to 165 confirmed cases.
"Many grocery workers are serving our communities without hazard pay after company cuts, despite the growing health risks from recent spikes in COVID-19 cases, said UFCW International President Marc Perrone. With new outbreaks like this in grocery stores, workers are continuing to get sick and die as they help to keep our food supply secure.
In Washington state, the union represents some 62,000 workers.
