Washington continues to see flattening in coronavirus cases; plans for next phase of vaccine rollout

Washington is continuing to see flattening and downward trends in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations as the state prepares to start to ease some restrictions starting next week.

During a news briefing Wednesday, public health officials said even though the state appears to be trending in the right direction — and they remain hopeful as vaccines continue to be distributed to people in the initial prioritizations — people must remain vigilant.

"We are still in a very high, tenuous position," said State Epidemiologist for Communicable Disease Scott Lindquist during the news briefing. "But the good news is we are seeing some flattening and some downward turn in the number of these cases."

As of Dec. 25, Washington was seeing a rate of 383.5 new cases per 100,000 people over the previous 14 days. That number was down from earlier in the month on Dec. 10, when the state was seeing a rate of more than 500 new cases per 100,000 people over the previous 14 days.
