Sunday stays quiet at state capitol amid heavy security

OLYMPIA – On Sunday, hundreds of members of the Washington National Guard lined the State Capitol in Olympia.

“We’re making a statement you can’t do illegal things here,” said Chris Loftis, spokesperson for the Washington State Patrol, the lead agency in securing the capitol.

“But we’re also making a statement, our system works. Let’s let it work. Let’s have fights inside the building with words and not around the building with clubs and fists and guns.”

Loftis said they had intelligence that some groups of protesters were expected to converge on the capitol around 12 p.m. on Sunday.

There wasn’t any violence at the capitol on Sunday, as just one protester rallied outside the fences surrounding the capitol.
