Washington officials 'committed' to making sure everyone gets second dose of COVID-19 vaccine
Washington has been working for the past two months to ramp up its coronavirus vaccination rollout, getting as many people as possible in to get the first dose of the vaccine.
As more people start receiving vaccines though, the state will also need a greater supply of second doses and state officials said Wednesday they are working to make sure everyone is able to get their second shot within the recommended amount of time.
"We are committed to ensuring there is a second dose of COVID-19 vaccine for everyone who receives their first dose," Michele Roberts, who leads the COVID-19 vaccine planning and distribution team at the Department of Health, said during a briefing Wednesday. "We've asked our providers to prioritize vaccine series completion."
Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine require that people receive two doses. For the Pfizer vaccine, people need to receive a second dose 21 days after receiving the first dose. For the Moderna vaccine, people need the second dose about 28 days after the first dose. If it's not possible for people to get their second doses within that time frame, it can be pushed out to about six weeks or 42 days, if necessary.
